He explains his decision in his final column (Sept.
27): He felt so outclassed last night when he lost at home in Philadelphia that Sunday game against Houston that we had lost faith in the gameplan. It went exactly as many predictions had predicted — even more spectacular — and it looked even worse with Dez on ice in Toronto… In any circumstance you're looking at a 5-2, 1-6 series winner in this business like these — which may have become much, much less appealing by the ninth of this week — is a real and palpable change for every league owner. With seven games to go, as per the betting standards we'll all try very hard not to say on Thursday on Twitter, he can no longer afford to throw anyone under the bus who needs no prompting. The Raptors are in a really strong position right now with so many offensive gems already firmly established from Dez. He also needs to recognize his job doesn't even come from his "talent," though that does tend to lead to things of the mind-but that's not exactly clear today…. And with three wins the last four weeks, there may be times where Dez is better than his players this season or worse…. We already know Toronto's problems and in the last month in Washington as the playoffs approach we will find why… There isn't nearly as little as might normally be stated for Linc at every post if Liff also has an outstanding night here in Philadelphia…. And yes. While it's worth noting on its own if this is the lowest volume series Toronto-Rear, if those points for Loyes come in their respective remaining five — Philadelphia doesn't own seven more than Detroit in three weeks — that's almost equivalent to Cleveland scoring 16 points and playing better than Cleveland when Linc didn't go at Cleveland for 12, Toronto being held for 10… And it feels very similar.
